Is There Rabies in Nassau County Raccoons?
Yes. On July 21, 2025, the Nassau County Department of Health declared rabies an imminent public health threat after 25 animals, mostly raccoons plus feral cats, tested positive since July 2024.
What the county reported
These figures are from the Nassau County Department of Health's July 2025 notice. Rabies had been eliminated in the county in 2016. The county runs an oral rabies vaccine bait program for raccoons, and no human cases had been reported as of that notice.
What the county tells residents to do
Do not feed or touch wild animals. Keep pets vaccinated and inside at night. If a wild animal is on your property, bring kids and pets in and let it leave on its own, or hire a nuisance wildlife removal service. After any bite or scratch, get medical care right away and call the Nassau County Department of Health at 516-227-9663, or 516-742-6154 after hours.
