Does One Cockroach Mean an Infestation?

Reviewed by William "Willy" Vizcarrondo, NYS DEC Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator C1825832. Updated September 23, 2026.

Quick answer

Usually, yes. Cockroaches are nocturnal and stay hidden, so by the time one wanders into the open there is very often an established population behind your walls, under the dishwasher, or inside the cabinet hinges. University of Maryland Extension says that if cockroaches are spotted during the day, the infestation is probably very heavy. This is especially true if you saw a German cockroach, the small tan roach with two dark stripes that dominates Long Island kitchens. One sighting is the cheapest moment you will ever have to deal with the problem.

Why do I have roaches in my clean house?

Because they came in with something. Kentucky's fact sheet says the German cockroach is often introduced in infested grocery bags, beverage cartons, or furniture, and Cornell's IPM program says they spread easily with food items and cardboard packaging. A used appliance, a case of soda, a box from a storage unit. Kentucky also notes the German cockroach does not occur outdoors; it thrives with people. A clean kitchen with a warm dishwasher and a drip under the sink has everything it needs.

How do I know if I have a cockroach infestation?

Droppings, egg cases, and sticky traps. Kentucky describes German cockroach droppings as pepper-like specks in areas of current or former activity, and Cornell says they leave small black droppings near a harborage. Rutgers describes the egg case at about five sixteenths of an inch long and says the female carries it until just before the eggs hatch. Sticky monitors settle the question; UC IPM calls them the best way to detect and monitor cockroach populations. Put a few under the sink, behind the fridge, and by the dishwasher for two nights.

What kind of cockroaches are in Long Island homes?

Three, and the first one is the problem. The German cockroach is about half an inch, light brown, with two dark stripes on the shield behind the head, per UC IPM and Cornell. UC IPM says it has the fastest reproductive cycle of all the common pest cockroaches: a single female and her offspring can produce over 30,000 individuals in a year. Maryland puts egg to adult at 55 to 68 days.

The American cockroach is the big one, about 2 inches and reddish brown per UC IPM, and it comes from sewers, storm drains, and steam tunnels. The Oriental cockroach is dark brown to black and lives in cool, damp places like basements and drains. Those two wander in; the German one moves in.

Do cockroaches go away on their own?

German cockroaches do not. Kentucky and NC State both say they are found only indoors because the outdoor environment does not support them. There is nowhere for them to go, and with an egg case of about 30 to 40 eggs per UC IPM and Kentucky, the population only moves one direction.

What should you do if you see one cockroach?

Identify it, set monitors, and do not spray. If it is a German cockroach, assume there are more and act on it now. If it is a large American roach near a drain, it may be a wanderer, and the monitors will tell you. Either way, keep the spray can in the cabinet, for the reason below.

Why do DIY roach sprays and foggers make infestations worse?

They scatter the colony and poison the bait. Kentucky says the ingredients in foggers tend to be repellent, causing insects to scatter and move deeper into wall voids, and that very little insecticide actually penetrates into cracks and voids. UC IPM says foggers are often ineffective because they do not reach the crevices where cockroaches harbor and breed, and that sprays may give a quick knockdown but do not give long-term control. Then there is the bait problem: Cornell says some sprays are repellent and can contaminate baits if the two come into contact. Spray first and you have made the treatment that works, work worse.

How Bobby Bugs treats cockroaches

Inspection and monitors to find every harborage.

Gel bait placed at the harborages. Rutgers' research describes the secondary kill: unexposed roaches die from contact with or feeding on poisoned ones and their droppings, so the bait works through the population. Cornell calls baits one of the most successful techniques for managing cockroaches.

Insect growth regulator. Virginia Tech explains that IGRs do not kill roaches immediately but the population declines because the insects are unable to reproduce. Rutgers says the same.

No fogging, no spraying over bait. Follow-ups spaced the way Rutgers recommends, every 2 to 4 weeks until they are eliminated.

Written 60-day guarantee. Cockroach treatment carries a 60-day written guarantee, and the quote is free and in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is one cockroach at night a big deal?

Less alarming than one in daylight, but identify it and set sticky monitors for two nights. If it is a German cockroach, assume there are more.

What kills cockroaches instantly?

A contact spray kills the one you see. The colony needs gel bait and a growth regulator over a few weeks, and UC IPM says sprays do not give long-term control.

How long does professional roach treatment take to work?

UC IPM says it may take 7 days or longer before you see fewer cockroaches, and Rutgers recommends follow-ups every 2 to 4 weeks until elimination. Our guarantee runs 60 days.

Do cockroaches mean my house is dirty?

No. Kentucky says German cockroaches usually arrive in grocery bags, beverage cartons, or furniture. They stay for warmth and water.

Are German cockroaches harder to get rid of?

Yes. UC IPM says they have the fastest reproductive cycle of any common pest cockroach, and the female carries the egg case with her, so surface sprays miss the next generation.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Empty the cabinet under the sink, clear the floor along the kitchen walls, and do not spray any store product beforehand, since Cornell says sprays can contaminate the bait.
